“Maktoub”, composed in 1991, is dedicated to my mother, Lilian Terry. The meaning of the Arabic word maktoub is fate/destiny, and that was one of mom’s favorite sayings, going back to her childhood in Cairo, Egypt, where she was born. “Everything in life is written by maktoub”, she used to say, “and so human beings can only follow their destiny, and not waste time on other paths when things don’t work out as planned”. The style of this piece is influenced by Dizzy Gillespie and his song “A Night In Tunisia”, with an Arabic rhythmic feeling in the intro, straight ahead swing drive, and an obbligato part in the middle of the song after each solo.
