This all-electric piece written in 2021, takes the listener to the edge of jazz and into the realm of fusion and funk. Written with a polyrhythmic structure in mind, with the tempos switching between 7/8 to 11/8 to 6/8 to 9/8. There is a clear reference to John McLaughlin’s use of melody and rhythm, and I enjoyed playing a particular sound combination on the synthesizer that is reminiscent of am electric guitar. The meaning of the title “One day honey, one day onions” is based on a traditional Arabic proverb, a reminder that life is full of both good and bad days, a description of the cyclical nature of life. My grandmother Alice used to tell me this saying and teach me temperance and patience. This piece is dedicated to her.
