“Sarava” is one of my earliest compositions, composed in 1981 before my 21st birthday, a happy Brazilian-infused song, which remains one of my most accessible with a bouncy samba rhythm and carnival feeling. Sarava is a slang expression from Rio de Janeiro which can mean hello, goodbye, peace, and love. It was used prevalently by the poet Vinicius de Moraes. Songs go through their own evolution, like people. In 2019, I took the original form of “Sarava” and enhanced it with a new rubato section and tight obbligato parts to support each solo. The new version, a true musical suite in 3 parts, is much more complex, while retaining the joie de vivre of the original.
